Historical Overview This place was once remembered by many as an “opium den” or a “drug hideout,” where those known as opium smokers gathered.
While it was indeed a place frequented by people addicted to opium, what many did not realize was that many who came here had reached the lowest point in their lives. With nowhere else to turn, they made the courageous decision to overcome their addiction and rebuild their lives.
In truth, this was not simply an “opium den.” It was a place of rehabilitation and renewal—a sanctuary where individuals sought freedom from addiction, embraced hope, and found the opportunity to begin again through faith, compassion, and community.
Located at 472 Changi Road (formerly known as 5½ Mile Changi Road), Nanyang Zhenkongjiao Tian Ling Main Tao Hall has a history spanning more than 70 years.
Zhenkongjiao (真空教) is a Chinese folk religion founded in 1862, during the first year of the Tongzhi Emperor’s reign in the Qing Dynasty, by Grand Patriarch Liao Dipin (廖帝聘) in Changning County, Jiangxi Province, China.
Grand Patriarch Liao was supported by four devoted disciples—Lai Renzhang (赖仁章), Lan Juyin (蓝菊音), Ling Bangbi (凌邦壁), and Zhang Shengjian (张声见). Together with Grand Patriarch Liao, they are collectively revered as the Five Patriarchs of Zhenkongjiao.
